Discover the challenges of self-paced online learning, including motivation, time management, teacher support, and technical issues.

Education has really come a long way. Do you remember earlier, we had to walk a 1000 miles (every parent’s favorite childhood story) just to get an education? We had to buy proper books, uniforms, and maintain a proper timetable; going to school was an adventure in itself. But now it has all changed drastically. Now, kids don’t really need to go to these institutions; they don’t need to wear uniforms, and sometimes, they don’t even need to wake up at a particular time so that they can attend class. It's all online. They just need a gadget (could be anything from an Android phone to a computer) and a stable internet connection; that’s it! That's all that they need.

Students can learn at their own pace, which is convenient for them. Earlier irrespect to the pace of each student, institutions had a particular way of dealing with these things, you had to come to school at a particular time, be late and you will be sent back to your home, your attendance must be above 70% or else you won’t be allowed to sit in the examinations. But now the students don’t need to learn this way if they don’t want to. Education has become a lot more convenient; students nowadays have the liberty to choose their own time to learn. They can learn at their own pace.

Today we will discuss this, where we are going to cover a few things, which include: What is Self-Paced Online Learning; then we’ll discuss a few of its challenges (like Difficulty Staying Motivated and Avoiding Procrastination, Managing Time and Maintaining a Consistent Routine, Lack of Teacher Support and Feedback, Limited Opportunities for Hands-On Learning, and Technical Problems and Internet Connectivity); then we’ll talk about what you can take away from this article. So without taking any more of your precious time, let’s jump right into it!

What Is Self-Paced Online Learning?

Like we have already discussed, nowadays, students have the liberty to learn at their own pace, all thanks to online education. This self-paced online learning is that! When students learn at their preferred pace, they don’t follow a strict schedule, they just learn whenever they feel like is the most convenient for them. Here they learn through, online courses and lessons, sometimes they just download these courses so they can learn it offline also.

The Biggest Challenges of Self-Paced Online Learning?

Every technology has its very own limitations or challenges. So it’s just natural that something like this self-paced online learning will have its fair share of challenges. So let’s look at what are the challenges one faces when they adopt this style of learning.

Difficulty Staying Motivated and Avoiding Procrastination

The very first challenge that we are going to discuss is how students may find it difficult to stay motivated. Think about it: when you go to an institution, there you are asked to follow a strict schedule where everything is already fixed. You have to submit your assignment before a deadline; you have a test on a particular day; you have to understand and learn all the concepts before the deadline, so it in itself is kind of a motivation push (Not exactly a positive motivation, but still a motivation)

But when you decide to study at your preferred pace. Then you are not being pushed by anyone. You decide when you need to study and when you don't. So, after a few times, this will give inception to the feeling of laziness, where you’ll feel that your progress has become slower, and it will (indirectly/directly) affect how many times and how many hours you are willing to study.

Here you have to motivate yourself, as there is no one else to motivate you (whether it be positive or negative). Many a times, students start to feel that their efforts are going in vain, and they don’t see any reason why they should be consistent in their learning journey. So naturally, skipping lessons, postponing some of them, and sometimes completely neglecting the difficult ones follows.

Managing Time and Maintaining a Consistent Routine

This is a very complicated challenge. As we have already discussed, self-paced online learning allows you to focus on learning at your own suitable hours; it can sometimes be a huge challenge. Sometimes learners can be someone who has many other responsibilities (like jobs, college studies and assignments, or family responsibilities, etc.) that they have to prioritize above this learning, so they may find it hard to take out time from their busy schedule for learning. Here, the learner might have the desire and the motivation to learn,n but because of all these other important responsibilities, they are unable to take out time to learn.

Lack of Teacher Support and Feedback

When you are pursuing education that’s traditional (offline), and at a certain point you have a doubt, so you go to your teacher asking them for their help so that your doubt is cleared, or sometimes you may think what you are doing is right, but your teacher notices some flaws and helps you not just by giving you feedback but also by guiding you through that journey to correct that error.

Now, is it possible in online mode, that too, self-paced online learning? No, absolutely not! If you come across some doubts, then either you have to find the answer on your own (through the internet), or you have to ask your online instructor and wait for their response. But these methods may not provide the students with a valid solution that they may find in the traditional mode of learning.

And when it comes to getting feedback, if they have no idea about their error in the first place, how are they going to find an answer? If they don’t know that they have committed an error, then why would they try to find a solution?

Limited Opportunities for Hands-On Learning

These online courses are actually quite convenient, but can all the subjects be covered properly through online education (that too, self-paced online learning) No!. The subjects that are practical in nature require hands-on learning. As you know, online courses only provide readable material or videos of lectures (which are only theoretical), but for subjects that require practical training, learning only the theoretical material won’t help much. Courses like cooking, or any scientific courses like Chemistry or Biology, require you to be present and carry out the practicals, not just observe through a video.

Technical Problems and Internet Connectivity

First thing that we covered in this self-paced online learning is the things that are crucial for this type of learning, and the things were a gadget (could be an Android phone or computer, laptop, or iPhone, any such gadget) and a stable internet connection. So, if you are motivated enough to learn something, you even took out time from your busy schedule but as you are attending the class, your internet goes off for some reason (maybe because of poor connection, electricity or any other issue). If you have a poor internet connection, then it may be difficult for you to continue learning.

Where you will face issues with videos loading, online classes buffering, study materials not downloading, and many such issues. Whereas a traditional mode has no such challenges that you might face.

These are some of the challenges that you might face while pursuing an online learning mode, that too, a self-paced one. But having said that, self-paced online learning does have many benefits that you can use to your advantage and find ways to counter the challenges (now that you know what challenges to expect). So, going through the article and learning about the challenges that you might face in self-paced online learning, it's up to you to decide if self-paced online learning is a suitable and convenient mode of learning for you or not?
