Discover common business growth mistakes, from poor financial management to ignoring customer feedback, and learn how to avoid them.

When you start a business, you must be ready to face the hurdles that every businessman faces. As a businessman, you learn throughout your life, whether through new technologies, new ideas, new growth strategies, or mistakes. Mistakes! This word must have irked you a bit. Nobody wants to make mistakes; everyone wants to be perfect. Well, in a perfect world, everyone’s perfect. But our world is anything but perfect (far from it, actually). In this world, even the most experienced of men commit mistakes (they are just humans, you know)

You are just a businessman, so you are bound to make mistakes; it’s not something that you should be ashamed of. The only thing that should shame you is not learning from those mistakes. Every businessman commits mistakes that can hinder their company’s growth. So, today we will look into a few common business growth mistakes, and will discuss how you can avoid those mistakes, and finally we will discuss what you can take away from the article. So, without further ado. Let’s jump right into it.

1. Growing Too Fast Without Proper Planning

As a businessman, one might have the desire to expand their business (and rightfully so), but everything should be done at a particular time. If your company is brand new, then there’s no reason why you would unnecessarily expand it. People first need to know about your company; your company must reap the rewards on its own. Then you should expand it, or else it will increase your company’s expenditure (unnecessarily), and your responsibilities will be doubled. These things are also excusable, but if your company doesn’t have the money, revenue, or resources to carry the responsibility of another branch, then you are just digging your company’s grave.

How Can You Avoid It?

Before expanding your business, first check if you have the budget to take on the responsibility of another branch. First, try to milk your current branch as much as possible, develop customer trust, use that trust to attract more customers, and when your company has acquired a lot of profits and resources, and your customers demands have increased which that single branch is failing to satisfy then you can decide to expand your business. Because now it’s necessary for your company to expand.

2. Ignoring Customer Needs and Feedback

Business that is reaping all the rewards, gaining customers and profits. But a large chunk of your customer base wants the company to work on a particular part of their service that they find inconvenient. So they share their feedback, where they praise certain things but also criticise a few things.

So what should you do? Ignore their feedback and keep on doing whatever you feel is correct, right? Wrong.. You must listen to all their worries and work on those things that are being criticized! That’s the only solution to this. But many times what businesses do is ignore what the customers are saying. This will lead to customer dissatisfaction, which will hamper customer trust, and it is the first nail in the coffin for your company.

How Can You Avoid It?

Instead of ignoring the customers’ feedback, you can use the feedback as your greatest weapon; this can help you know what your customers want. So what you should do is collect customer feedback on a daily basis, and use their feedback to recognize what you can improve in your products and follow through with it (change wherever required).

3. Poor Financial Management and Cash Flow

This is closely related to the first mistake that we discussed. Where we talked about how expansion can lead to unnecessary expenditure. In this point, we will focus on the second part: unnecessarily spending the company’s money and resources on things that are not that important. So, the unnecessarily cash flow is another mistake, which will stop your company’s growth and will be one of the main reasons for your company’s downfall.

How Can You Avoid It?

In order to avoid it, you need to monitor your income, profit, expenses, prepare budgets, and judging from the results predict the future expenses, the company can also check when is the customer payment expected, and when are the employees expect pay, based on all these you can decide how to use the money flow in your advantage.

4. Failing to Build the Right Team

Now this part is something that you should keep very close to your mind. It’s very important for you to know that a company works with the efforts of not a single person but a team. So the team is something that should be experienced (and talented) enough to work for you, and if you plan on hiring a fresher, then they should be properly trained before getting hired. If your company is being handled by a strong leader (like yourself) but behind you stands a group of untrained, inexperienced, and not-so-suitable team members, then your company will die a very slow death.

How Can You Avoid It?

Should hire employees based on your needs. And when you hire freshers, have a training period where they are given practical training sessions, where they not only learn but also work on a few projects, and it will allow them to grow, and then they will help your company to grow! Then give them responsibilities according to their abilities; now you won’t hand a major responsibility to freshers, will you? No, you will hand it to someone who is experienced enough to take charge of that responsibility.

5. Failing To Track Performance and Adapt

When you started one trick worked so will it work again and again and yet again. It’s hard to say. You see, the market changes quite frequently, so with that, you also need to adapt. Many times, companies don’t check their progress; if they are getting enough customers and visitors to their websites, then they don’t care how well their company is performing. To them, this is success, but it’s not.

What’s worse is that even when the company is suffering financially, losing its assets, and (in general) facing loss, companies still ignore these and don’t adapt to changing situations; instead, they keep on using the same resources that led them to this fate. And what do you think, will those companies survive? Absolutely Not!

How Can You Avoid It?

The basic thing that you can do in order to avoid such situations is, review your results. Compare the results with the company’s goals. Through this, you can find out what strategies worked and what didn’t work. And for the ones that didn’t work, what was the reason behind their failure? And once you find out the reason (or the ones that don’t work at all), then you can find out the solution to those problems, finding alternative strategies to the ones that didn’t work. Tweak the existing ones a bit, based on the demands of the market and so on.

These were a few mistakes that a business commonly makes; now you know what mistakes you can make while growing a business. And how you can avoid such situations where you will commit these mistakes. Having said that, you need to realise one thing: no matter how hard you prepare, you’re bound to make some kind of mistakes while growing a business; it’s normal (and, honestly) quite a natural part of one’s growth. In those moments, all you need to do is take a few steps back, study the entire picture, take a deep breath, and then come up with solutions. The nicest thing about making a mistake is that it allows you to learn from it, so in the future, when you are faced with such situations again, you can face them without a single worry in the world.
